Welcome to this week’s edition of The Digest.
The holiday break is officially over. Now we’re officially in the season of circling back. I’ll try to write quietly this week for those of you reading on the plane home from CES.
If you read last week’s newsletter, you know I’m betting big on microdramas this year. Yesterday, one of my production partners, Second Rodeo Productions, had their newest microdrama featured in Variety. The PLAYBACK cast announcement marked a few industry firsts.
First microdrama cast announcement in Variety.
First microdrama in the musical genre.
First microdrama to star a mega-creator, Hannah Stocking (78 million followers).
First microdrama sanctioned by SAG-AFTRA.
And probably a few more firsts along with those. Hollywood and social media platforms are moving quickly to adapt to microdramas. TikTok created a section of the app for “Minis” to keep users from leaving for dedicated microdrama streaming apps. Disney and Fox have invested in microdrama platforms and made commitments to produce new series at scale. YouTube creators and producers are excited for the potential of scripted storytelling to reach new audiences.
